I did not always realize it at the time, but in many ways I ‘grew up’ in the historic preservation business. It has been quite a trip.
Now I realize 2 truths of my work life:
- I have a huge amount of knowledge and experience that is really valuable
- I feel a responsibility to share what I have learned
As a young girl one way I got to spend time with my father was helping him clean up his woodworking shop on weekends. As time went he let me do little jobs…always learning the details of a task while absorbing the big picture of our mission.
Even though I was pretty much a tomboy in those early years, now I am a woman who hesitates to say exactly how many years I have been in this business. But I embrace the experience I’ve gained over those many years…experience that is more important than a number of years any day.
The point is that my husband and I both learned a great deal working with my father. We both have significant experience on our own. And now we are both thrilled with the idea of sharing our knowledge and perspectives on historic preservation.
Looking back on how we got here has been an exhilarating journey.
Notable preservation projects include:
- The house where President Lincoln died across the street from Ford’s Theater in Washington DC.
- The Thaddeus Kosciuiszko National Memorial managed by the National Park Service in Philadelphia PA
- Franklin Street Train Station in Reading, PA for Berks Area Regional Transit Authority (BERTA)
- Schmucker Hall, Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg PA is now restored as the Seminary Ridge Museum
- Restoration of the 1725 John Maddox Denn House, a Colonial Home private project
There is history in all of these structures. There is also my family’s history in our preservation projects. The Keperling Preservation Hub is my way of sharing our history with you.
