This interesting project took a former tobacco warehouse that had been converted into a set of offices (in what was likely Lancaster, PA’s first ever adaptive reuse project) and adapted it once again – this time into a private residence. The project was so successful it won the C. Emlen Urban Award for Preservation from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.
The project was featured in an article in the April 1999 edition of Lancaster magazine, where Chuck was able to talk about his passion for the restoration and adaptation of historic buildings, as well as his inspiration for fine millwork.
The article also features the homeowner and her journey to the adaptive reuse project, as well as information about the remodeling market in general. Keep in mind, this was a market that was largely ignored during the late 90’s when this project was done and the article written. Reading it today is an interesting study in the evolution of construction markets.
